3DS sees 40% sales increase in Japan

As if it wasn’t doing well enough already, Nintendo’s 3DS has seen a 40% sales increase in Japan last week following the release of Kid Icarus: Uprising.
Unit sales rose 40 per cent from 64,017 to 94,011 during the week ending March 25th. New console bundles including Super Mario Land 3D and Monster Hunter Tri-G are also to thank for the increase.
PS3 and PSP also had another healthy week, with sales of 25,750 and 19,875 respectively.
Given that this time last year people were announcing the death of the 3DS, it’s amazing to see how quickly Nintendo has turned its fortunes around.

Trine 2 half-off, Hardcore Mode out

Another weekend sale to take advantage of; Frozenbyte has cut the price of Trine 2 by 50 percent on Steam.
To make taking the plunge even sweeter, the developer has released a fresh patch that adds a new Hardcore Mode and “several other improvements.” Just one of said improvements is described though: the “self-levitation” trick can now be disabled.
“The Hardcore Mode is our thanks to our most hardcore fans, and a throwback to the good old days,” Frozenbyte CEO Lauri Hyvärinen says.
“This is for the fans who thought the Tower of Sarek level in the first game was just right in its pre-patches state, for those who really want an extra challenge from the game. The Hardcore Mode adds a big value to replayability, especially in online and offline co-op, and really means you have to work together or face game over.”
The sale lasts until Monday, 10 AM PST. It applies to the Mac App Store as well.

Worms Revolution announced; new engine, out in Q3

A new Worms game is coming, Team 17 has announced. The little squirmy buggers will next do battle in Worms Revolution, which has been developed from scratch and comes complete with a new game engine, the studio says.
It’s also said that “exciting new features and challenges have been introduced whilst old favourites such as the Super Sheep and Holy Hand Grenade remain to thrill fans.” Brilliant!
Have your first look the game in the short trailer below. It’ll be out in the year’s third quarter, on PC and (unspecified) consoles.

Sega to streamline, cancelling projects, cutting jobs

Sonic publisher Sega has announced its intentions to streamline its business in the US and EU. In the long term that could mean better quality releases, but in the short term it sadly means game cancellations and job cutbacks. The company is said to be facing “extraordinary loss” for fiscal 2012, which ends tomorrow.
A statement from the publisher read: ”The Consumer Business centered on Sega Corporation is expected to post operating loss in the year ending March 2012, due to the challenging economic climate and significant changes in the home video game software market environment in the US and Europe.
“Given this circumstance, the companies determined that in order to actualise earnings recovery of the Consumer Business in the following period and after and return to a growth path, it is essential to streamline organisations in the field of home video game software in the US and European markets, while shifting to a structure that corresponds to change in environment, including strengthening development in the field of digital content.”
Parent company Sega Sammy said of the situation: “We conducted detailed reviews of earnings projections for titles targeted toward the US and European markets and decided to narrow down sales titles from the following period and after to strong IPs, such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Football Manager, Total War and Aliens, which are expected to continue posting solid earnings.
“In accordance with this, we are cancelling the development of some game software titles.”
Let’s hope the losses aren’t too huge; we’d hate to see one of the industry’s best publishers scale back on its presence. At least promising titles like Aliens: Colonial Marines are seemingly safe for now.

THQ’s Warhammer MMO no longer an MMO, 100+ let go

Warhammer 40 000: Dark Millenium OnlineTHQ’s Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium MMO is no longer an MMO. The troubled publisher has announced that it’s decided to turn this one into a single- and multiplayer game instead.
As a result, 118 have been let go from its Vigil and Relic studios.
Vigil is said to continue work on the project, alongside the upcoming Darksiders II, while Relic will set its sights on Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.
“As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO,” says THQ CEO Brian Farrell of Dark Millennium.
“However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features.”
The platforms and release timing will be announced at a later date.
“Because we believe strongly in the high-quality and vast creative work that is in production,” Farrell adds, “this is the right decision for both our portfolio and for gamers devoted to this powerful property.”

Everyone must have heard of the Witcher series by now. But if you haven't yet played a Witcher game, you may wonder: what exactly is a Witcher? Developer CD Project gives an answer in this rather beautifully made new video.

Joe Danger: SE 50% off on XBLA

Joe DangerFor those who don’t already own it, or the original PSN version, a steep discount of XBLA’s Joe Danger: Special Edition may be of interest.
Gold subs can pick up the Hello Games trickster for 600 MS Points right now. That’s half off, then. A nice a warm-up for next month’s Trials: Evolution — latest trailer here — maybe?
Prefer other types of motorized transport? Sega Rally Online Arcade and Daytona USA currently carry lower-than-usual prices as well. They’ re available for 400 MS Points each.
Double Fine

Post-Double Fine Kickstarter sees huge increase in videogame funding

Double Fine’s massively successful Kickstarter drive didn’t only deliver the green for Double Fine Adventure, but Kickstarter as well.
Videogame projects on the crowdfunding service pulled in $1,776,372 in the service’s first two years. Since the Tim Schafer studio did their thing though, the site has seen $2.9 million . Or $6.2 million if you want to include Adventure.
Furthermore, Double Fine’s project attracted 60,000 new donors, who have now funded other projects as well.
The second most successful videogame-related project right now seems to be that of Brian Fargo’s Wasteland 2, which has, with over two weeks to go, pulled in $1.8 million. That’s twice what was originally asked for.

Baldur’s Gate EE headed to Mac, too

Baldur's Gate

Baldur’s Gate‘s Enhanced Edition is, in addition to the already-announced platforms of PC and iPad, also coming to Mac, developer Beamdog has confirmed to Shacknews.
“If you can connect to the App Store, then you can play BG:EE,” co-founder Cameron Tofer has told the site of the OS-X version. “We will support all machine configurations.”
An Enhanced Edition of Baldur’s Gate II has been confirmed to be in the works as well.

    Thatgamecompany co-founder leaves studio

    News:
Having just released the critically acclaimed Journey, Thatgamecompany is losing one of its key developers.
Kellee Santiago has parted ways with the likes of Jeno Chen after co-founding the studio six years ago. She explained her departure to Gamasutra.
“So much of my work at Thatgamecompany was really supporting Jenova [Chen's] visions for the types of games he wanted to make,” she said.
“And I felt like I have done everything I needed to do there, and that he’s in a great place now to go on and continue with some of the other people at Thatgamecompany to take that to a whole new height.”
The studio itself offered its own statement on the news: ”After the hard struggle behind Flow, Flower and Journey, we’ve finally reached our goal. Awaiting at the mountaintop are new enlightenments and new sets of milestones for our life.
“While we want to continue the path of Thatgamecompany, Kellee has found a new direction in her career. Though our path in the future may be different, as TGC begins our next project, we wish Kellee a good journey and that our paths may cross again.”

Updated: The UK date is in, too. It is indeed the 31st.
Original: Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will be out in late August, publisher Activision’s announced.
The US gets it on the 28th. There’s no official EU date yet, but chances are it’ll follow the traditional Friday release, which would be the 31st.
A new trailer is out as well, catch that here:

If you need a reminder, here’s the latest video we have of the game:

Aliens: Colonial Marines on Wii U has “so much more on offer,” getting “a lot of attention”

Going by recent comments made by Gearbox head Randy Pitchford, the Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines is at the very least worth checking out. “The Wii U version has so much more to offer,” he says.
“No other platform can do what the Wii U can do.”
“If you love 360 games, you are not used to being in a world where you have this new interface. But once you get used to that, you imagine the possibilities; there are some opportunities that are just not possible on any platform that does not have that device.”
Aliens: Colonial MarinesWith Nintendo yet to reveal final details on their console, Pitchford couldn’t spill all but did say that once Nintendo “opens up their kimono a little bit more about that platform and where it is going, we will be there right with them talking about how Aliens is using it.”
All in all, the developer has given the Wii U version of the game “a lot of attention.”
“A lot of cool opportunities with that device that are going to make a very unique and compelling experience on that platform.”
Aliens: Colonial Marines will release on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this fall. No launch window for the Wii U version has been given yet.

Namco Bandai’s tease a new Monster X Monster title — report

    Namco Bandai

The ‘X’ project that Namco Bandai has been teasing for the past week or so is probably a Monster X Monster game, a report would have us believe.
The company is said to have the license and is working on a new game for the PSP, which would certainly match with the PlayStation face button symbols that were added to the teaser site a few days ago.
The game is said to  follow the Gon and Killua characters and is expected this fall.

Sony, Microsoft not stupid or evil enough to block used games — analyst

Yesterday’s rumor on the next PlayStation included a bit that surely raised an eyebrow or two. Namely, that it would lock games to a single account, effectively attacking the used game sales business.
Microsoft has been rumored to have some kind of an anti-used games protection as well.
According to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, that wouldn’t be the smartest move the companies have ever pulled, as retailers who make big bucks from used games, like GameStop, may choose to not even stock their new hardware.
“It isn’t really in Sony’s or Microsoft’s best interests to block used games,” he’s told Gamesindustry International.
“It would benefit Activision and EA slightly, and would hurt GameStop a great deal. If Sony unilaterally did this, I could see GameStop refusing to carry their console, and sales of the PS4 would therefore suffer.
“If one does it and the others don’t, the one who does it will see a loss of market share.”
Pachter doesn’t see the core market responding too kindly to such a move either and believes that no console manufacturer is actually “stupid enough to do this unilaterally,” and none “are evil enough to do it together.”

CCP’s World of Darkness MMO gets first in-game footage

EVE Online developer CCP's third known-of project, World of Darkness, got its first in-game footage at the fan fest the company held last week. It'd not direct feed, and there's no actual gameplay but it is a first glimpse nonetheless.

EVE, DUST developer working on two secret projects

EVE Online and DUST 514 developer CCP is working on two yet-to-be-announced projects, a  slide shown during a presentation at the company’s fan fest last week revealed.
An image with five pillar was shown. One for EVE, one for DUST, and one for upcoming MMO World of Darkness. The final two were not named.
PC Gamer followed up on that with a number of people from the developer, but none of them were too forthcoming. It was found out however that a possible PC version of DUST would go under the DUST pillar, so the two unmarked ones are definitely something completely new.
“Whether they’re games or tech I can’t really say,” EVE’s lead game designer Kristoffer Touborg would only tease.
“Maybe just see it as us thinking into the future.”

SimCity to require constant Origin connectivity

Here’s something that’ll go over well; EA’s upcoming SimCity will require players to have constant connectivity to its Origin platform.
While the game will be sold on other download services when it launches sometime in 2013, players won’t be able to escape Origin as it is an ‘internet-dependent experience’, according to lead designer Stone Librande. Speaking with Joystiq, Librande says it’s a necessity due to players’ impact on the game’s global economy.
SimCity was announced earlier in the month. Grab some more details and a trailer here.

    Black Ops 2 changes leaked

Here’s a load of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 — which, by the way, is itself still not confirmed in any way — rumors that show what we can expect from this year’s entry to the shooter mammoth.
Posted — and since deleted — over at Activision’s official forums is a whole list of changes that Treyarch is reportedly planning for their sequel, including a new Escort gamemode, the removal of Deathstreaks and changes to the Pointstreak system.
Go over it all below. If you want the source, the forum topic is available through Google cache here (via).
    Game Modes
    • Escort
      - Will be a new game mode
      - Similar to Search and Destroy however a live player must be escorted to one of three areas (or two depending on the map) without being killed.
      - The match will have rounds, consisting of one life only.
    • Drop Zone and Kill Confirmed will return
    • Team Defender and Infected will not return
    Pointstreaks
    • Will follow from Modern Warfare 3’s system
    • Larger emphasis on objectives
      - A bomb plant is worth 2 points
      - A neutral flag is worth 1, however an enemy flag is worth 2
      - A flag assist capture is worth 1, a capture is worth 2
    • The Specialist Pointstreak has be modified
      - 2 kills now gets you 1 perk
      - The 4th kill gets you 2 more perks
      - The 6th kill gets you 3 more perks
      - The 8th Kill gets you 4 more perks
      - You do not get every perk when you reach 8 kills
      - Perks only become “Pro” when you have them Pro
    • RC XD will not return
    • Heat vision
      - Is a new Pointstreak reward
      - When you get the required points, you can activate this Pointstreak and your player pulls out a scope and attaches it to your weapon.
      - This scopes main advantage is it’s ability to detect enemies through most walls.
      - Note, the scope can only be attached to primaries not including shotguns
    • Item Packages
      - Requires 5 points
      - Fall along side care packages and air drop traps.
      - Features a list of package items only
      - Including ammo, mini gun, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, and body armor
    • Prestiges
      - There will be 15 prestiges

      - Clan Tournaments can now be implemented
    • Removed
      - No MOAB or Nuke
      - No last stand
      - No death streaks
      - No flame thrower attachment
    • Map Design
      - Map design and size will be following Black Ops not Modern Warfare 3
    • Sniper Rifles
      - Improved sniper rifle usage.
      - No aim assist for any sniper rifle.
      - Less sway
    • Customization
      - No longer just perk 1 chooses the players appearance
      - Appearance is a combination of all perks and type of Pointstreak being used.
    • Hardcore
      - Larger emphasis on hardcore than ever before
      - No grenade launchers
      - Only vehicle guided rocket launchers permitted
      - Respawn timings decreased (for most modes)
      - 1 bullet in the foot will no longer kill a person, a head or chest shot is usually required.
      - A person will now bleed out if severely injured.
    • Perk System 2.0
      - The Perk Pro system has been upgraded
      - There is now 2 options a perk can advance to.
      - Both require different challenges to unlock
      - Once the desired Pro version is unlocked, the player can select that as their “Perk Pro”.
      - Once selected, the only way to choose the other option is by entering prestige mode.
      - For example Perk slot 1 has the perk called Speed
      - Speed – Reduces the time taken to aim down the sight
      - Pro I – Swaps weapons faster
      - Pro II – Throws equipment faster
    • Combat Training
      - Will be returning with vast improvements.
      - Difficulty is no longer based on how long the bots take to start shooting.
      - Bots now have an advance AI system
      - Similar to the behavior seen in the MW3 Spec Ops survival
So far, Rockstar's been terribly quiet on the online component of Max Payne 3. No more. This three-minute video here shows plenty of gameplay from the multiplayer side of the occasionally slow-mo shooter.

PS4 codenamed Orbis, no PS3 games, no used games — report

There’s been plenty of talk about the next Xbox over the past few months, but while the rumored 360 successor is enjoying the spotlight, little has been heard of Sony’s PS4.
Kotaku have just brought about an end to that. The blog has released a tonne of info about the PS3 follow-up, citing a ‘reliable source’ for all of the details.
First thing’s first; the console is currently code named Orbis, and could be with us as early as holiday 2013. Orbis is a Latin word which, funnily enough, is used in a famous saying that also encompasses Sony’s latest handheld: Orbis Vita (or Orbis Vitae), meaning ‘circle of life’. Perhaps the Vita will play a major role in the new system, then, or maybe the console comes with a copy of The Lion King. Kotaku suggest this could even end up being the final name for the console.
Early specs include a AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU, though this could well change during development. This would mean games could run games at a resolution of up to 4096×2160. Also, 3D titles could now be supported in 1080p.
Select developers have apparently had their hands on dev kits since earlier this year, and continued to receive updated kits, with finalized ones arriving at the end of the year.
Now for the controversial stuff; apparently there will be no PS3 backwards compatibility with the new system. It’s a given that PS2 won’t be supported, but losing PS3 games this early on might be an issue. Also, much like recent Xbox rumors, Kotaku suggests that Orbis won’t run used games. All games will be released on PSN but those you buy on disc will be locked to a single PSN account. That said, those disc titles will be able to be transferred completely over to the HDD or marked as downloaded so you can grab it off of the PS Store too.
Perhaps the biggest question mark; you’ll have to be connected to PSN to even start up a game. Because that’s worked out so well for certain PC games as of late, hasn’t it?
And that’s about it. Sony has said that we won’t see the PS4/Orbis as E3 this year, so maybe TGS will reveal all.

Baldur’s Gate on iPad less than $10

The upcoming iPad version of Baldur’s Gate won’t cost an arm and a leg. Asking for more than $10 “doesn’t make sense,” developer Beamdog’s COO Cameron Tofer has told Kotaku.
But there’s even more happy news. The Enhanced Version of the classic RPG won’t forget to include the original’s co-op multiplayer. And, Tofer also confirms that an iOS version of the second Baldur’s Gate is also in the works and can be expected later in the year.
The first remake is scheduled for a summer release.

STAR WARS Kinect gets launch trailor
With Star Wars Kinect out the door in just seven days now -- next Tuesday, April 3rd -- the launch trailer for the wave-your-arms-a-thon is here.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier beta now on PS3

In an unexpected move, Sony’s PS Blog has announced that a beta of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier would be coming to the PS3 next month. I say unexpected because Ubisoft originally announced the shooter’s beta to be exclusive to Xbox 360 players, and to be accessed via the Splinter Cell: Conviction game disc.

The beta is even called “closed” and an “exclusive,” so it looks like Ubisoft may have went back on their initial plans and did a complete 180 on this one.
There are no specific dates for the beta’s kick-off yet, but PS Plus subscribers can expect early access.
Future Soldier will be out in May.

‘Xbox Loop’ next year — rumor

Microsoft is to release a new console in late 2013, rumors have it, but it’s not a next-gen machine. Instead, a stripped down, ARM-based version of the Xbox 360 is expected.
The hardware is said to focus on Arcade-style games and Kinect apps, and will be priced to compete with Apple TV, which goes for around $100 these days.
The same rumor also suggests that the “true successor” to the 360 will ship afterwards, with the next generation Kinect expected around 2015.
Microsoft on its part has offered Gamespot up the expected party line: “Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention. Beyond that we do not comment on rumors or speculation.”

Sony Japan getting division mix up

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced a bit of a switch up in its operating structure this week.
As of April 1 there will be new ‘First Party Publishing’ and ‘Online Service’ divisions at the company. These will fall under the developer/publisher relations and marketing categories respectively. Company president Hiroshi Kawano will also be placed in charge of SCEJ’s business strategy, which was previously left to vice president Norio Sasaki.
Nothing that will really effect us in any way then. Hopefully is does mean SCEJ get on with a new Patapon game soon, though.
Alright, probably not, but a guy can dream.

    New Amalur DLC out

Thanks to the achievement addicts over at X360A, we now know that a second DLC pack for Kingdoms of Amalur is inbound.
The name of the pack hasn’t been revealed, and most of the achievements inside are hidden bar one named Murder Most Fowl which rewards 25 points for killing 50 Pteryx’s, whatever they are.
Expect a more official reveal of this DLC in the near future.

Sainsbury’s stocks up in wake of GAME troubles

With UK specialist retailer Game Group currently facing a tough administration period, a lot of speculation has gone on about who will pack up the slack in the company’s absence.
It looks like the UK’s major supermarket chains could be the answer, with Sainsbury’s drawing first blood. The company has announced its intentions to increase stock of new games as well as launching a sale that slashes prices on both consoles and recent releases.
The chain’s current reductions look like this:
    - PlayStation 3 console: £164.99 (was £199.99)
    - 3DS console: £124.99 (was £149.99)
    - FIFA 12: £26.99 (was £44.99)
    - Mario and Sonic at the London Olympics Wii: £20.99 (£34.99)
    - Assassin’s Creed: Revelations: £17.99 (was £29.99)
    - Final Fantasy 13-2: £14.99 (was £24.99)
    - Just Dance 3: £14.99 (was £24.99)
    - Mario Kart 7: £27.99 (was £34.99)
    - Super Mario 3DS Land: £27.99 (was £34.99)
    - Mario and Sonic at the London Olympics 3DS: £27.99 (was £34.99)
    - Black Eyed Peas Experience: £12.99 (was £17.99)
Games manager Gurdeep Hunjan offered comment on the new direction: “Gaming is a key part of our entertainment offering so we are excited to be reducing prices by as much as 40% for this exclusive sale.”
“Our breadth of offer is now bigger than ever before and customers can be assured that they can get the most popular games and consoles from us at outstanding value, whilst doing their weekly shop.”
But would a chain like Sainbury’s ever stock the likes of Catherine, Yakuza or other less popular gems?

Wii U “on par” with current-gen — Vigil

Wii U is, at the very least, “on par” with the PS3 and Xbox 360, Darksiders II developer Vigil has found, with game director Marvin Donald saying that “the hardware’s been on par with what we have with current generations.”
“We got the game running on their hardware pretty quickly. Visually, for the most part, it’ll be pretty much the same,” he also said, further adding: “Based on what I understand, the resolution and textures, polycounts and all that stuff, we’re not going to be doing anything to ‘up-res’ the game but we’ll take advantage of the controller for sure.”
This does not appear to be the experience across the board though, as others have said the new Nintendo console to be several times as powerful as current-gen machines. Though granted, these have been reports based on unnamed sources.
Nintendo is expected to spill the beans on what exactly the machine is all about at E3 this June.

Game administration: 277 stores closed, 2,100 jobs lost

Game Group’s administrators, let loose on the company yesterday, have made their first decisions. 277 GAME and Gamestation stores across the UK and Ireland have been shut down, with more than 2,100 employees let go.
The number of closed doors may rise yet; up to 300 stores may close says the company.
MCV has the entire list of shuttered stores here. There’s no differentiation on if its a GAME of Gamestation store that’s closed down but you should be able to work it out via the address listed.

Awesomenauts hopeful for eventual PC release

Ronimo’s Awesomenauts is prepping itself for a PSN and XBLA release in the very near future, but a PC version of the game is currently unannounced.
The developers would, however, like to get confirmed and on for release a little later in the year. The team said as much to Joystiq, revealing that a possible Steam release would first need to be reworked a little bit in the back end. With the team’s current capacity this is reportedly an issue, and they’re talking it over with Valve.
Fingers crossed it makes its way over sooner rather than later.

Is Assassin’s Creed III’s revolution the next Rapture?

Gamers aren’t the best travelers. We always seem to pick the same locations for our holidays: war-torn towns, post-apocalyptic wastelands, fantasy forests with orcs and elves. But occasionally we break the mold and go where few have gone before; to underwater cities or lush jungles. We’re always enticed by a world which we’ve hardly experienced, which has helped put games like Red Dead Redemption and Dark Souls on the map this generation.
But few do it as well as the Assassin’s Creed series. Setting and authenticity have always been highpoints of the franchise, letting us get in between the cracks of Roman rooftops and scurry around the Crusades, picking off historical figures and admiring the breathtaking sights.
That same strength remains true of Assassin’s Creed III, which practically had us signed up at the very mention of ‘American revolution’. Seeing the game last week, it was clear that Ubisoft had made few sacrifices in bringing that same level of realism to a period that, in our books, is much more fascinating than any the series has seen before, from both a historical and gameplay perspective.
A short gameplay demo presented to us spoke volumes about the team’s no compromise attitude to getting players as close as possible to the setting the game takes place in. Since its reveal many have expressed concern that new hero Connor wouldn’t have much to climb on given the setting’s reliance on the wilderness over the many towns and cities that dominated earlier entries. It’s true that a good bulk of the game carries out in the frontier, but Ubisoft’s re-worked Anvil engine (now named AnvilNext) does a remarkable job of trading towns for trees. As the demo starts we watch in awe as Connor effortlessly weaves under and over branches all with the kind of ease that Ezio and Altair displayed climbing much simpler surfaces.

The new environment poses other interesting changes, too, like deep snow that reduces the assassin’s usual nimbleness to clumsy plodding around with the occasional stumble making getaways much more complex. As Connor investigates a body found amongst the trees, a bear rudely announces his intention to eat our hero. It takes some fancy blade work to bring him down, highlighting an intriguing survival aspect to the game that draws comparisons to the likes of Snake Eater. Imagine being lost out in the wild, low on supplies and danger behind every tree. It would be a sensation completely new to the series, which, as the critical reaction to last year’s Revelations will tell you, is something we’ve be clamoring for.
After a brief jog over the tree tops and a signature dive into a (now mobile) haystack, we find ourselves in Boston. It’s in displaying the life and soul of a city that Assassin’s Creed games have always left their mark and a short walk down the docks ensures that AC3 will be no different.
Boston docks is a bustling, busy scene. As Connor calmly strides towards the town center he’s drowned in a sea of traders and heavy-lifters. An apple tumbles from a crate, which an eager thief snatches and darts off with, its owner screaming for help. Meanwhile a dog happily trots past while Connor swims through the crowd. The developer’s knack for a creating a sense of place clearly hasn’t been lost here.
Classic Creed breaks out as we reach the edge of the docks, where Connor escapes a group of guards that catch him without the necessary ID papers. Skipping over stalls and carriages still carries that basic thrill, though showing off this kind of action within the confines of a free roaming game always feels a little forced. It’s a cinematic experience, watching the character dive around streets and through windows, but it defies the sandbox nature of the game. How can we be sure that we’ll pull off the same chase with such precision? We normally mess it up and end up accidentally leaping off of a tower and to our leg-breaking death.

But the demo’s third act is easily its most impressive. Here the game flexes its muscles with an incredible battlefield set-piece that sees Connor slip between cover, dodging gun fire from British forces. Of course, he isn’t here to fight for either army, but instead on the hunt for a target on the opposing side.
The scene is a first for the series; explosions and screams of agony fill the air one moment, while silence floods the grassy plains as both sides take a moment to reload (which is sped up, the developer admits, from the usual one minute reload time to quicken the pace) in the next. Traditionally Assassin’s has tasked you with sneaking around environments you’re already familiar with but here there’s a brilliant sense of desperation and the unknown to the proceedings.
Some patient waiting and mad dashes put Connor through his paces before he manages to flank the enemy. Back on the tree tops and round to the left of the battle, he makes short work of a patrol using a rope dart, a Chinese weapon that acts like a vicious metal death whip. The dart ensnares an enemy from above before Connor meets his foes dead on, putting the classic AC battle system to the test. Yes, we see that bayonet to chin, bullet to brain kill from the trailer and it’s every bit as glorious in-game as it is in-engine.
The demo ends with a heart-pounding dash at the target from behind the enemy camp. Connor sneaks through bushes (that he auto-crouches in) to get behind the base, then storms in, dodging gun fire and slicing obstacles before that familiar leap into the air and flick of a wrist blade close out the footage. Needless to say it signs off in style.

Everything about Assassin’s Creed III is reinforced in its setting. The woods create survival, the towns create realism and the battlefields create a stunning theater of war. For a series that prides itself on setting and authenticity, Assassin’s Creed III could well prove to be its finest hour.
So far, so very, very good, then. It was a powerhouse display, which we’d expect from a publisher of this caliber putting out its biggest game ever. And with multiplayer and a myriad of other features still in the dark, there’s still plenty more to see before the game’s October release.
